Dickerson, Rene
A self-taught artist since childhood, Rene has always believed that he was meant to be nothing else. Rene's shear love for art, and his incredible natural talent have brought him sincere respect from fellow artists as well as national and international art critics.
Native of California, Rene is a humble artist, deeply religious and devoted husband and family man. Inspired by life's experiences, he captures the viewer's attention through a remarkably unique and masterful style. While he paints characters from all cultures, he places a special emphasis on the Black culture both native and contemporary. Rene develops his figurative paintings and graphics by employing brilliantly colored oil pastels and delicately applied 23K gold, silver and copper leaf on Arches Cover black paper. He also works with canvas using similar techniques. Bright colors, elongated arms and free flowing lines on some of his pieces create exceptional movement and bring each piece to life in front of the viewer. Rene's most familiar trademarks are his round faces and hooded eyes, which represent sameness among his different characters both in soul and in spirit. Another signature feature of Rene's present style is what he terms "the following eye" -his subjects hold the viewers gaze with a beckoning, sidelong glance from elongated, almond-shaped eyes that appear to "follow" viewers from varying sight lines.
His enthusiasm and passion in his art are felt by many others, as Rene's paintings have received numerous awards in exhibits throughout the country. The on-going visibility, popularity and demand for his work have enabled him to "give back" to many organizations and projects concerning children and family issues. Most recently, Rene has been working with Rehabilitation & Employment Services Inc., an organization that focuses on improving the quality of ' life of autistic people. He has continuously demonstrated his generosity by donating his time, talent and proceeds from many of his works to this organization.
"Beginning with a blank space, building it with color and movement fulfills a need in me to speak to the viewer. While in my artistic process, I am able to escape reality and enter into my own corporeality and conjure up a world of my own creation. My goal is to communicate my truth through my art, hoping the viewer will have a rich, resonating experience."
