A Lei is Never Forgotten
These two koa bowls, which are treasured in Hawaii, are filled with lei maile, intertwined with strands of ‘ilima, lei ‘awapuhi melemele (ginger), lei tiare, lei pikake, lei poepoe pikake, and lei kukui. The two gardenias are also used for lei making for very special occasions. As a watercolor artist, painting these koa bowls challenges me. I love the experience of painting wet into wet in these shapes. I keep the paint wet until I get my desired effect and then hope for the best when it dries—they call watercolor the medium of happy accidents!
