Evening Mist (Sold)

Yao-ji was the beautiful daughter of a minor king. She died when she was young, and was buried on the slopes of the Wushan mountain. One day, the king of Chu was on a hunting expedition. Toward evening, he decided to camp for the night. As he fell asleep, he dreamed of a beautiful maiden. Taking pity on his loneliness, and noting his regal demeanor, the girl lay down and shared his mat with him. During the night, the two fell deeply in love. As she arose in the morning, the king asked who she was and how he could meet her again. She replied, "I am the Woman of Wushan. My home is beneath a craggy precipice on the west slope of the Wushan mountain. I am the rose-tinted cloud in the morning, and the misty rain in the evening. I will wait there for you forever." With that, the king awoke. Feeling a deep sense of loss, he ordered a temple to be erected on that site, to commemorate the night spent with her. To this day, when people speak of the "cloud and rain", they are referring to the intimacy shared between a man and a woman.
