La Coquette
Story:
Yang Kuei-fei was one of the Four Great Beauties of China. She was the Tang emperor's favorite concubine. Because of his obsession with her, he neglected his official duties and devoted his time to the pleasures of the flesh. The traitorous general, An Lushan, took advantage of this lapse and staged a rebellion, invading the imperial city. The emperor, together with his wives and children, army and generals fled south, till they reached the village of Ma Wei. There, the soldiers dug in their heels and gave the emperor an ultimatum: the death of Yang Kuei-fei, whom they considered responsible for their predicament. Most historians say she was forced to commit suicide on the hills outside of Ma Wei, but rumor has it that the emperor, unable to order the death of his favorite, hanged her maid in her place, and smuggled Yang Kuei-fei to Japan, where she lived out her days in luxury.
