Love Is Lost

$8,500.00

Story:

Beautiful Princess Lechang was the younger sister of the Chen emperor. She and her husband Xu, the captain of the east palace retinue, were devoted to each other. As the empire fell, Xu broke a bronze mirror in two. Handing her one half, he said, "I must leave with the army. A beautiful, intelligent woman like you will easily attract the attention of a wealthy protector, so you will be safe. On the fifteenth day of the new year, go to the market and offer your half of the mirror for sale. If I survive, I will meet you there."

As Xu predicted, the Chen dynasty fell. Princess Lechang became the concubine of a powerful duke of the new Sui dynasty. Xu suffered great hardships, but on the appointed day, he eagerly made his way to the market. There he saw a maid trying to sell half of a bronze mirror. Rushing over, he matched up his piece with hers. She then told him that the princess was now the concubine of the duke, and could not come to meet him. Broken-hearted, he left in tears. When Princess Lechang heard this, she resolved to starve herself in memory of her husband.

When the duke learned of the deep love his concubine held for her husband, he was greatly moved. He held a banquet in honor of Xu, where he reunited the pair. With his blessing, they settled in southern China, where they lived out the rest of their days.
