Although originally a Chinese subject, the story of Guan Di has evolved into Japanese folklore and theater. A great third century Chinese general, Guan Di was Deified in the seventeenth century, and is honored as a mentor by law enforcement in China. The Kabuki Eighteen play Kan-Yu retells his legend.
